Wejherowo - the town of culture and art

Getting to Wejherowo Nanice from Gdynia Główna takes only 31 minutes by fast city train. Wejherowo, like Gdynia, can fascinate you with its inter-war architecture, including a few examples of modernism. One may find a wide panorama of architecture styles in the city, some examples of Art Nouveau, Art-deco, mansion architecture and objects dating a few centuries back, such as Calvary, a complex of chapels, built originally in the XVII century. Its landmark, distinguishing the town in the whole region, is a modern building housing The Culture Centre in Wejherowo (Kashubian Philharmonic Hall).
The story of fullfilled vows.

While Jakub Wejher, considered to be the founder of the town, was taking part in the battle under Biała, in 1634, pinned under the rabble, he vowed that if he survived he would build a church and found a cloister. He delivered on his promise and chose as the place Wejherowska Wola, where the building of a town began. On January 13th 1650 the settlement was granted with the town privilege licence, given to it by Wladysław IV, the king of Poland. Wejherowo was the only private town in the region of Kashubia at the time.

Jakub Wejher built the Church of the Most Holy Trinity in 1643, and in 1648-1651 a cloister under the invocation of St Anne for The Order of Friars Minor, which survived, together with its splendor interior dating back to the XVIII century. He initiated also founding the famous Calvary with its 19 chapels built in the years 1649-1664. A few of them were built at his own expense and the others were founded by members of his family and courtiers. Currently, Calvary of Wejherowo consists of 25 chapels. The newest of them, Brama Oliwska, built in the XIX century is commonly considered as the 26th chapel of Calvary. In the very centre of the town there is a statue of Jakub Wejher, who proudly looks at his former settlement.

History in the background
It is also worth to pay a visit to the old town hall. The first, wooden town hall was built in the XVII t century. It survived for a hundred years and then it was replaced with a brick building which lasted as long as to 1906. Because of the progressing dilapidation and the ripping off ceiling, it was disassembled at the beginning of the XX century. A new building, based on XVIII architecture, was commissioned in 1908 and since then it has housed the town authorities.
The Przebendowscy and Keyserlingks? Palace is located in the beautiful and finely restored town park. The residence dating back to the XIX century now houses Literature and Music of Pomorze ? Kashubia Museum. Apart from collection of regional objects one may find in the museum also the unique records documenting the beginnings of the town. The interior of the palace, decorated with polychromies, are also worth seeing.
In Kashubia style
The inhabitants of Wejherowo are very proud of their Kashubia roots. The route of Kashubia Alphabet leads through the town to commemorate Kashubia language. Singular notes are set on granite plinths scattered all around town monuments. Following the route will enable you seeing all the most important places in Wejherowo. The last, fourteenth note, leads to Przebendowski Palace, near which a Kashubian man sits on the bench, ready to sing the alphabet and play its melody on the accordion, to everyone who presses the button.
